ABOUT

INTRODUCTION

Caroline moved into directing after a long career in theatre and its related forms as a performer, working with Peter Darling, Arlene Philips, Antony Van Laast, Alan Harding and Clark Peters. Throughout the 1980s she worked with music artists on videos including Nomad, Adamski, Kiss, David Grant, Jackie Graham, Queen and Freddie Mercury. Choreography includes: many rock concerts and live shows for Steve Coogan and Tim Minchin amongst others. As a performer her West End Theatre includes: West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar and Chicago.

In 2008 she returned to study directing at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art under Sue Dunderdale and with mentor Michael Attenborough CBE. During this period she was assistant director to Matthew Warchus on God of Carnage on Broadway and Stephen Unwin at the Rose, Kingston.

Directing credits include; Steve Coogan Live UK & Australian tour, the Rod Stewart Musical Tonight’s the Night (2006 and 2014 tours), The Shape of Things by Neil LaBute (Edinburgh Festival), Love in the Time of Barriers by Hassan Abdul Razzak and Perve by Stacey Gregg (Vanburgh, RADA), Look Back in Anger by John Osborne (Rose, Southwark), The Cook and the Insurgent by Hassan Abdul Razzak (BBC3 Celebrating Sanctuary at the Southbank), Immaculate Conception by Cary Crankson (Vanburgh, RADA), Mr WH – A Forgery by Billie Brown (RADA), Marbles by Lydia Prior (Soho Theatre Project Wednesday), Staging for Tim Minchin Live Tour. Associate director to Eric Idle on Monty Python (Almost) Live (The O2, London 2014). Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse Legends Live Tour (2015).

She worked alongside John Cleese and directed the adaptation of Fawlty Towers Live which premiered in Sydney August 2016. Associate Director on the West End production of Roddy Doyle’s The Commitments Musical 2013 (The Palace Theatre) and directed The Commitments Musical for the UK tour (2016/17).Most recent directing credit include Early Doors Live 2018 by Craig Cash and Phil Mealey and consultant Director on Clive Tulloh and Joanna Lumley’s It’s All About Me UK Tour 2018/19.

After working on the early development of Only Fools and Horses the Musical she then directed its West End debut which is currently playing at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket. After developing and adapting a play for stage based on The Cut by Hibo Wardere she then collaborated with Jen Rainsford in adapting its themes into the screen play, I Carry Your Crown.

THEATRE, TELEVISION & FILM

CJay then joined the West End Production of Starlight Express as the role of Volta and then on to play Ashley and Dinah in London and Japan. Returning from Japan she went on to play Consuelo in West Side Story.

Other West End Credits include Jesus Christ Superstar at the Lyceum Theatre, Liz and Mama Morton in Chicago at The Adelphi Theatre and Close to Heaven for Jonathan Harvey and the Pet Shop Boys.

Other acting credits include: the lead character in The Dice directed by Oystein Karlson, a short film produced by Claes Berkman, she also featured in two commercials directed by Oystein Karlson, the voice over for the French and Saunders Tour, the Bill, Casualty, The Men’s Club,Toot and Top Tottie at the Red Lion Islington and Simply Socrates at the Adelphi Theatre.

CJay continued to learn her craft working on stage and television with choreographers such as Arlene Philips, Peter Darling, Antony Van Laast, Alan Harding and loves to study and interpret the style of the great Bob Fosse. She was also inspired by performing with the likes of Francis Barber, Maria Freidman, Clark Peters and Broadway’s Ann Reinking. She has also been heavily influenced by the study of traditional dance and theatre in Bali.

CHOREOGRAPHY & MUSIC

As a choreographer she has worked a various live shows in England and Europe with artists such as Alison Limmerick, Adamski and Nomad, in television shows including Grange Hill and Eastenders, and has recently choreographed/staged for Trans World Orchestra, Tim Minchin, Edinburgh 2008 and the Steve Coogan Tour 2008.

During her career Cjay has always been involved with the writing and production of music. Her own work with Two Dam Dread saw her signed to ZTT and her music being co produced by Trevor Horn. She has written closely with Louise Clare Marshall, one of Britain’s acclaimed Jazz singers, as well as creating and choreographing the musical/dance fusion that was Trans World Orchestra.

Recent work includes 6 tracks on Louise Clare Marshall new album Wait For You.

EARLY YEARS

After winning the Cosmopolitan Dance Award at the age of 16, CJay trained at the Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts where she studied all aspects of dance, drama and musical theatre and attained her teaching qualifications. Throughout a varied career she taught at vocational schools including Arts Education, the Mountview Academy and Italia Conti.

On leaving college over 30 years ago, CJay joined Wayne Sleep’s Hot Shoe Show at Norwich Theatre Royal and then went on to dance in live shows and pop videos for artists including Queen, Go West, Kiss, Prefab Sprout, David Grant and Jaki Graham’s ‘Mated’ and Freddy Mercury’s ‘Made in Heaven’. Other TV credits include Live and Kicking, the Hippodrome Show and Top of the Pops. Her early freelance dance work also included dancing for the revolutionary choreographer Arlene Philips which resulted in her first West End Theatre job in Starlight Express.
